Trans Workshops
The majority of the content in this webpage focuses on
trans and gender related issues, as does a good portion of
my personal work. There's quite a wide array of
topics that deal specifically with trans and genderqueer
identities. Here are a few of them.
Trans 101: The basics
In a nutshell: the basics. Designed for an audience
with no exposure to transpeople beyond basic media
representations. Including quick terminology, common
myths, how to be an ally, an overview of major trans
issues, and personal story(ies)
Non-binary gender: What does it look like?
While many people can understand non-binary gender on a
theoretical level, but will be unable to see it as it
exists in the people around them. Without an image of
non-binary gender to work from, anyone with a non-binary
gender is quickly attributed a male or female gender.
Through a wide range of examples and activities, this
workshop focuses on developing this understanding and
teaching the ability to see non-binary gender.
Trans Health and Medical Access
Navigating medical institutions can be daunting. Even
more so for transpeople. This workshop discusses the
barriers to adequate trans health care: The gatekeeping
system that allows providers' individual biases to
determine the outcome of transpeople's lives, the lack of
trans-specific medical knowledge in medical institutions,
and discrimination in medicare and private insurance
policies. These barriers are also powerful motivation
factors that encourage transpeople to self-medicate and to
avoid routine medical checkups. The audience should
gain an understanding of how threatening medical
institutions can be for transpeople and why so many
transpeople avoid them.
Not Being "Trans Enough"
Sometimes it seems like every single person who is trans
has felt that they aren't, or have been told that they
aren't "trans enough," or "really" trans. Whether that
means that they aren't being "successful" in presenting and
passing as their preferred gender, or that they aren't
transgressing gender and breaking gender norms enough, the
idea that there is a "real" trans identity (which not
everyone attains) is harmful on many levels. Playing
on internalized transphobia It builds self-doubt and
self-esteem problems. It reinforces the idea that someone
else can tell you what your gender is (or ought) to be.
And it fosters an environment of hostility and infighting.
This workshop covers the basics of this dynamic and traces
its roots through the history of transphobia.
Trans Sexuality
This workshop is only presented to audiences with a
significant level of trans awareness to begin with.
Ideal format is a facilitated discussion with people
bringing their own experience to the discussion.
Sexuality is a topic that is rarely included as a part of
the conversation about trans issues. It can be an
extremely sensitive topic for a lot of people. While
I have many issues of sexuality that I've explored and
addressed in my writing and can speak to, I prefer to let
the groups experience guide this workshop whenever possible.
