Thank You to The Task Force
A letter to
the Task Force executive director, Matt Foreman:
I wanted to let you know that I've become rather cynical
over my few
short years working with national organizations. Being
young, being
genderqueer, being polyamorous, being a part of the leather
community,
being a person of color, and wanting to see ALL of my
communities
represented and protected by the work I engage in—I had
thought it
would be impossible to work on the national level. All of
the
organizations I saw would do one frustrating thing or
another and
argue for legislation that would be meaningless to myself
and my
friends. Most of it still seemed worthwhile, but it wasn't
anything I
could participate in. And some of it were things I wanted
to actively
fight.
This has all given me a strong skepticism of national
organizations.
Yet it seems every now and then, often when I am most upset
at what is
being done on my behalf, I find something that The
Task
Force has
done, or something that you, Matt, have specifically said.
And it's
like a breath of fresh air. I gently sigh and feel once
again like I
am a part of a larger family.
I find myself so frequently tempted to write critical
letters when I
see something I don't like. But it can be difficult to
remember to
give positive feedback when good things are being done. So
I wanted
to send you this letter, and let you know that most often
it doesn't
even matter how successful you are. Simply knowing that
you are there
doing this work is comforting.
Thank You.
Matt Foreman's response:
Tobi,
Thank you very much for your message - it really means a
lot to me. I
was just thinking I've been getting a little too angry in
our releases,
but you brought me back to reality!
